Of all the dumb, punk loving, transnational half-Swedes, I should not be the one with a Tumblr.

HBO is heading into some irreverent territory with a newsmagazine project with Vice.

The project, titled Vice, will be hosted by the company’s founder Shane Smith, who will executive produce the series with current HBO talker Bill Maher and Vice’s chief creative officer Eddy Moretti. CNN’s Fareed Zakaria will be a consultant for the weekly show.

“Vice has emerged as a premier new-media brand through a savvy combination of irreverence, smarts and fearlessness,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said. “We are excited to offer a forum for their groundbreaking style of news coverage and look forward to a show that’s like nothing else on TV.”

The series will spotlight the Vice brand’s unique and youthful angles on domestic and international news.

The cable show is just the latest move in the company’s bid to expand its multiplatform reach beyond its print magazine, which has included vice.com, an international network of digital channels, a television production studio, a record label, an in-house creative services agency and a book publishing division.

I’m sure pseudo-libertarians and douchebag hipsters will revel in this. I would too if it wasn’t for that “Zakaria” word.

Huh. Seems to me like Fareed Zakaria is to sociopolitical commentary what Steven Spielberg is to film. I.e. super popular and super accidentally racist.

Now if only I could make wittier comments.

Tried to go to your “ask” but it appears to be non-existent.  Could you expound on your reasoning here (in regard to Zakaria, not Spielberg)?

Well, my logic goes like this. Spielberg has an amazing storytelling and moviemaking ability, just as Zakaria has great, logical, and rather unique arguments about his opinions. However, Spielberg also has a nasty habit of catering to a white, Westernized viewpoint (i.e. mistranslating the Talmud excerpt, an awful movie called Amistad, etc.). I’ve never read Zakaria, but people outside the Western paradigm like to call him out on framing things in a very similar way. Essentially, he oversimplifies complicated topics from a very white American perspective, often failing to accept the merits and individual complexities (i.e. the fact that non-Western people are capable of the same accomplishments and subtleties as Western folk) of the people he is talking about, subconsciously writing them off as the Other. They both kind of treat far-off peoples with an scientific approach that is usually reserved for animals rather than fully developed, thinking humans.

Wow, I’m not very good at writing or arguing. Sorry about that. But I should say I intend to eventually read some of Zakaria’s works, but with a heavy grain of salt. The dude is super-zealous about America’s relationship with the world, but fails to consider that maybe other countries have relationships with the world, too. I guess read his works, learn what his detractors have to say and come to your own conclusions.

Demokhratia - “Legale Prostitution”

I’m going to assume the subject matter of this song isn’t offensive. But my understanding of Arabic is super-mega shit, so what do I know.

Also it’s hardcore so I couldn’t understand the lyrics anyway…

"When countercultural identification takes the form of racial fetish, it relies upon and perpetuates the very privileges accorded by the dominant culture it is attempting to subvert."

White Riot: Punk Rock and the Politics of Race

Currently reading this book. It’s right up my street and eternally fucking relevant especially to my last text post.

Nearly everyone I follow on Tumblr shits on white people and capitalism 24/7. I fucking love it.

TheTysuneJzai: marththebland: see here’s what i don’t getto do that sort of thing at...

marththebland:

see here’s what i don’t get

to do that sort of thing at all, to disrupt a class with a Big Hilarious Prank and run out the door and not come back, you’d have to be in the mindset of “school sucks” and you’d have to not take school seriously

because i mean you wouldn’t do…

I would totally do a big hilarious prank AND I give huge shits about school (or at least an education). The day I stop having fun fucking with people is the day something something.
